The Chilkoot Wall Trunk

| Gold was discovered on Bonanza Creek in the Yukon in 1896, the news got out in 1897 and that marked the start of the Klondike Gold Rush. This trunk, being a wall trunk and only 30 inches long but built with the sturdiness of much larger trunks could have traveled the Chilkoot Trail with no problem. Maybe it did. There was such a mass movement of people headed for the Yukon, surely all their gear wasn't carried in back packs. |
| To get to the Klondike, up the Chilkoot trail, one had to pass through BC in Canada. The government at the time made it law that anyone who crossed into Canada had to have a minimum of one year's supply of food each, that amounted to one ton, (900 kg) not to mention clothes and shelter. It took an average of three months making many many trips up and down the Chilkoot trail to haul that much cargo and still not be where the gold was or any guarantee that you'd even find some. Thousands upon thousands made the trek and this trunk could very well be a survivor. |
| Unlike ordinary trunks that have to be moved or pulled away from the wall to be opened, wall trunks like this one eliminate that hassle thereby making them more suitable for tight quarters, see image below. |

| The inside tray, half tray actually, is new but not as elaborate as
the original was.
It has three compartments with removable felt liners. Being only a half tray it can slide back and fourth allowing access inside the trunk without being lifted out. Great idea! |
